Read Write Inc. (RWI) Spelling at Our School
At St Day and Carharrack we follow the Read Write Inc. (RWI) Spelling programme to teach spelling in a consistent and engaging way across the school. This research-based approach, developed by Ruth Miskin, builds on children’s existing phonic knowledge and equips them with strategies to become confident and accurate spellers.
How it is taught
RWI Spelling is taught through short, focused daily sessions. Each week, children learn and practise a new spelling pattern or rule. Lessons are highly structured and interactive, combining direct teaching with partner and group activities to help pupils explore and internalise spelling rules. Regular review and practice ensure that previous learning is revisited and embedded.
Implementation at our school
-
Teachers model spelling strategies and encourage children to apply them in their writing across the curriculum.
-
Weekly focus words and activities support the transfer of spelling skills into everyday writing.
Impact
This consistent approach ensures children develop secure spelling knowledge and increased confidence in their written work. Over time, pupils become more independent and accurate spellers, which positively impacts the quality of their writing in all subjects.
Online Practice at Home
Every child has access to their own online Oxford Owl account. This platform allows pupils to consolidate the spelling rules taught in school through a range of fun and interactive games. These games give children opportunities to revisit patterns and words at home, making spelling practice more enjoyable and supporting long-term retention.
By combining daily teaching in school with engaging online practice, we provide all our pupils with the tools they need to become confident, proficient spellers.
