Geography Curriculum Intent Statement
At St Day and Carharrack Community School our engaging geography curriculum inspires pupil’s curiosity about the world and its people, remaining with them for the rest of their lives. A deep understanding of the Earths key physical and human processes prepares young people with the knowledge, skills and understanding in order to become responsible citizens and make sense of their world. This encourages them to face the challenges that will shape our societies and environments at the local, national and global scales.
Carefully planned rich, enjoyable learning experiences stimulate interest in and a sense of wonder about places. Pupils study where places are, how places and landscapes are formed, how people and the environment interact, and how a diverse range of societies and environments are interconnected. Active participants in their own learning, children’s interests and opinions are fostered and embedded. Learning builds in pupils own experiences to investigate places at scale, from the personal (local) to the global.
Engaging in geographical enquiry encourages questioning, investigation and critical thinking about issues affecting the world and people’s lives, now and into the future. Through the enjoyment of fieldwork, successful learners acquire skills to learn spatially, use maps, visual images and learn new technologies. More importantly, Geography inspires pupils to become the ‘change makers’ of the world by exploring their own place in the world, their values and their responsibilities to other people, to the environment and the sustainability of the planet.
