Weekly emails

w/c 15th April
Dear Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful holiday - the sun eventually came out!
We are into the final term for our Year 6 and it is going to be enjoyable, exciting and engaging for all! There are so many opportunities planned for the class and they are going to be super busy from the off!
We begin the term by engaging in Environmental Week - with activities arranged by our RRS Change Makers. We are taking part in a Climate change and the Ocean workshop on Wednesday and then have our class trip to the beautiful Glendurgan Gardens on Thursday - thank you so much for all permission slips returned, it really does help the day run smoothly.
We will be writing persuasive and informative letters about the current school recycling system to our local councilors and ask for their help in developing a more satisfactory approach to this.
We will be continuing our preparations for SATs with homework coming home on Monday to be handed in the following Monday - this gives everyone a weekend to complete it. Now more than ever, it is imperative that homework is completed and supported at home. Reading, timetables and spellings also need practising - little and often is key here.
As the weather improves, please ensure a full water bottle, sun cream, sun hat (fingers crossed?!) and suitable coat is in school daily. We will hopefully be able to use the field and outside classroom on a regular basis.
As part of our extended transition offer, Mr Housett will be in school this week teaching French to the class.
PE will be Friday this week.
I can't wait to see the children tomorrow and am really excited about the term ahead!
Have a great week,
Best wishes

Dear Families,
I hope you enjoyed the sunshine at the weekend - hopefully this is the start of some nicer weather!
Last week we had a brilliant time with the Minack Theatre Group - the children were amazing; we certainly have some budding actors and actresses. Watch this space for news on an end of year performance!
Thank you to everyone for supporting last week's homework; a much more positive response and super spelling test results. This week, I will be sending home some SATs practise papers to complete over the two-week break. The extra practise is definitely paying off.
There will be the last swimming session for the boys on Monday and PE will be on Wednesday.
As we move into the Summer term - the final term for our Year 6, we will be learning about the Amazon Rainforest, the indigenous people that live there and why this spectacular place is so vital to the balance and sustainability of our wonderful planet.  We will also be reading a collection of tales from the Caribbean and enjoying the wonderful story telling from other cultures.
Thank you to all of you that were able to make it to the Easter Fayre - the raffle will be pulled on Tuesday so there is still time to buy raffle tickets.
Environmental week will be the first week back after Easter and we have our trip to Glendurgan Gardens to look forward to - please ensure all slips are returned this week. Our RRS Change Makers will be busy that week making sure that the children's voices and views are heard (UNICEF Articles 12 &13) when we write to the council about recycling.
Wishing you all a wonderful Easter break and I look forward to an enjoyable, exciting and engaging Summer Term.
Best wishes

Dear Families
What a busy week!
Year 6 have been amazing in class again and are proving themselves to be responsible leaders around school. Our Reading Champions spent some time with our youngest children on World Book Day enjoying books together and our RRS have been prominent in assemblies sharing our Articles and organsing new events.
The children were amazing during the dance workshop where the book The Iron Man was brought to life - I have added some photos onto the class web page.
It has been brought to our attention that there have been some very unpleasant and inappropriate messages circulating on a Whatsapp group. This is really disappointing as we have spent a great deal of time over the last few weeks discussing the appropriate use of phones - we even had the police explain it to the children so they are aware of the seriousness of this. Please can you ensure your child is using their phone appropriately and not causing distress to anyone else. As per the newsletter and as shared by the children :

Yr6 children discussed the session back in class and wanted to share these crucial messages with our whole school community to keep everyone safe from harm:

“I was surprised by the fact that if you are over 10, the courts and police could get involved if you have sent unpleasant or threatening words or images to another individual”

Age ratings of APPs, this really surprised us! Netflix has an age rating of 18, Snap chat is 13 ,Messenger 13 and WhatsApp was 16!

“Don't text, chat, communicate with people you don't know in real life. Even if they send pictures, these may not be real and they could be using fake ones”

“Don't be inappropriate online, don't say things that might cause upset or harm to anyone else,. Overall, just be responsible, kind and nice to each other. Treat people as if they are in the room with you. Treat people how you want to be treated “

“THINK BEFORE SENDING!”

PE will be on Thursday. Boys swimming starts on Monday -please ensure correct kit is brough tin.
With only a short time to go until we break up for Easter, please can you check your child is handing in their homework - last week was the worst return of homework we have had - it is vital that you support with this especially as we approach SATs.
Let's hope for an enjoyable, exciting and engaging week - it is British Science Week - so let's get ready for some whizzes and bangs!
Below is a reminder of our Articles for this term.
Best wishes,
Beth Popperwell

  •
The Big Book Swap -Come to school and swap a book.  Children to bring in any preloved books ready for swapping!
  • Comfy, cosy reading - Children can come to school in comfy clothes ready to settle down with a good book.

Dear Families,
I hope you had a lovely weekend.
Thank you to all of those that came to our Book Fair. The children had a super time looking at books and sharing book talk with each other. Many of the children were inspired to try a new author and some have already started their new book!
This week continues the book theme, when we take part in a Bringing Books to Life dance workshop on Tuesday to celebrate World Book Day on Thursday. The class are going to be creating movement based on the book The Iron Man by Ted Hughes - how exciting.
The school would like to invite you to come and join us on Tuesday at 3pm when we will be singing Cornwall my Home, in celebration of St Piran's Day. Words are coming home so you can join in too!
On Thursday we will have a whole school book swap organised by our RRS Change Makers, so please can everyone bring in a book they are happy to swap.
We welcome Mr Housett on Monday for Spanish and will have PE on Wednesday this week.
A message from Miss Clark:
Sapphire class have been exploring diversity as a key theme of their Windrush history topic this term and are keen to explore the diversity within our school community. Sapphire class are working towards a diversity display in school to celebrate all the cultures, religions and traditions that make up our families and they would love for you all to get involved. Please take some time this week to talk to your children about their family members and ancestors. Miss Clark and Sapphire class would be very grateful if you could share any photos and a brief description with school to be included in this project. Any photos sent to school would be greatly appreciated, photocopied for the display and safely returned to you, alternatively you could email images to be printed in school.

Please consider:
  • Does/Did any of your family come from a different country or part of the UK?
  • Did you or any family member ever live in another part of the world?
  • Have you always lived in Cornwall?
  • How have any different cultures/religions/traditions influenced your lifestyle?

The class are really enjoying our class text Impossible Creatures by Katherine Rundell and are looking forward to starting The Last Bear by Hannah Gold.
Have a great week,
Best wishes

w/c 26th February
Dear Families,
I hope you managed to stay dry this weekend - this weather!
The children were amazing last week and coped with being indoors in a really mature way.
It was certainly a busy week last week and we had groups of children engaging in many different activities. As always, the feedback from other schools and adults, was that behaviour was exemplary - very proud of all of Year 6.
We will continue to concentrate on our SATs revision alongside many sporting opportunities, art and languages this week. It is an important time and essential to get the balance of concentration and collaborative activities right for the children.
On Thursday this week, we welcome PC Kirsty Anderson in to school to talk to the children about being safe online and using social media. She will also talk to Year 6 about the career opportunities offered by the Police Force.  As part of our Year 6 PSHE curriculum, we have a focus on future careers and the children have been thinking about a career they may like to pursue in the future. We have put together a career board - Building Our Futures - where the children have found out about different careers, qualifications needed and how to study for them.
We also have our Book Fair on Wednesday - please see the newsletter and website for details. The children should also be able to talk to you about it as we have discussed it at length in class.
PE this week will be on Friday.
Girls swimming this week will be at 1:30 on Monday.
Please continue to support homework and spellings - they are getting trickier and need a little bit of practise each day.  I will be logging on to TTRS this week to see who has been accessing it at home, so please encourage the use of this.
Have a great week and let's hope for some dry weather soon!
Best wishes

w/c 5th February
Dear Families,
Thank you so much for attending the SATs meeting and for letting me know if you were unable to come. I am attaching the information PowerPoint for you.
The children have been very busy over the past week with super learning in all curriculum subjects. They are stepping up to the pace and showing great maturity.
Last week we enjoyed science with Miss Phillips and maths with Mrs Wade, they are truly delighted with the engagement and contribution of the class.
RRS Change-Makers have been involved around school promoting our articles and supporting the cake sale - which was amazing! Thank you to Khalen's family for our Friday slice of cake!
This week will be completing some SATs practise papers and I know the children will do their absolute best.  I will also send some home for over half term.
I look forward to seeing you at parent meetings in the week, please let me know if you cannot attend and we can arrange a time to meet.
PE this week will be on Wednesday.
Best wishes for the week ahead,
Beth Popperwell

 w/c 29th January
Dear Families,
I hope you have enjoyed the mild weather over the weekend and managed to get out and about.

Last week was busy again and the children are continuing to engage, enjoy and excel with their learning.
Responsibility was the word for last week, responsibility with their own learning, behaviour and organisation. Most of the children took this message onboard and I saw a real effort from the majority of them in settling down and completing all learning and handing in homework. Please continue to have this conversation at home - it is vital for a smooth transition to secondary school.

I cannot stress the importance of your child knowing their multiplication facts; they should be able to recall all facts up to the 12 x table, swiftly. We are having weekly multiplication tests and last week a few children found this tricky.

Hopefully, you will be able to join me on Wednesday 31st for a SATs meeting - 2:30pm in the hall. Thankyou to those parents that have already emailed in to say they are not able to come - I will send home any information to you.

PE this week will be on Wednesday, please ensure correct PE kit is worn. It is not a non uniform day! We will have further transition opportunities with Redruth School teachers in this week to teach maths and science.
It is National Storytelling Week - please click on the link for ideas and resources to support this:

w/c 22nd January
Dear Families,
I hope you have had a great weekend!
There was a lovely calm atmosphere in class week and many acts of random kindness - well done Year 6 a pleasure to teach.
There were also many positive comments about maths and how much they enjoyed finding out about ratio - this week we start exploring algebra alongside our daily mental maths sessions.
We enjoyed science and Spanish with teachers from Redruth School and as always, the behaviour of the class was excellent. These transition opportunities will continue throughout the year which is brilliant for the children as it gives them opportunities to meet teachers and the expectations they have.
We have begun researching the Black Death as part of our history learning and will continue this, this week when we will be writing diary entries. The children are enjoying the topic and it is certainly generating some interesting questions.
We will have PE on Tuesday this week.
I have added some photos to our class web page, please have a look to see what has been going on in class.
A reminder of the SATs meeting on 31st January in the hall at 2:30pm. This will give you an opportunity to ask any questions and find out about the week itself and how you can help in the weeks leading up.
Of course, reading and times tables are key to success with all learning so please support and encourage this at home. Thanks again for your invaluable support with homework.
Have a lovely week,
Best wishes

w/c 15th January
Dear Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend - amazing to have more dry days!
Last week, the behaviour and attitude of the class was superb! They are really picking up the pace and giving it their all. Great resilience and determination shown across all subjects - even those that they find tricky.
In science, we are enjoying investigating electricity and circuits and this week on Tuesday, as part of our transition package,  we welcome Miss Phillips from Redruth school in to teach an afternoon of science. This is a great opportunity for Miss Phillips to get to know some of the children and for the children to meet another secondary school teacher.
Our transition package continues with Miss Wade and Mr Housett teaching maths and Spanish on Monday.
Curriculum leaflets will come home this week with key learning topics for the weeks ahead. A reminder that homework will be sent home on Monday to be returned the following Monday - well done all of the children that have already handed it in. If your child cannot complete homework, please email me so I can ensure they have a space over lunchtime to complete it. As well as essential for our learning, it sets them up with good habits for secondary school.
PE this week will be on Wednesday.
Attendance and punctuality were great last week  - it was brilliant to have nearly a whole class at 8:45 - we were able to start learning straightaway - Thank You!
Date for your diary - there will be a SATs meeting for parents on 31st January at 2.30pm to go through some of the key information and answer any questions you may have.
Have a lovely week,
Best wishes

w/c 4th Dcember
Dear Families,
I hope you have all had a super weekend.
What an unusual week last week with snow and late opening! However, the children were brilliant and remained engaged and focused despite the distractions.
This week, we will be carrying out some end of term assessments which will give me a clear idea of what to plan for next term and where the focus needs to be.  To help with this, please ensure your child is in school and on time. It is distracting for both the child and class when pupils are entering late and they often miss those very important learning inputs.
We will be rehearsing our Christmas Concert this week ready to perform on the Thursday 13th December -please ensure you have your tickets ordered.
PE this week will be on Tuesday and we have Spanish on Monday with Mr Housett.
We are still collecting packaged food and toiletry goods for our RRS Change Makers collection, please hand in to the school office or class.
Keep up to date with information by reading the newsletter and checking emails regularly - I know a few parents missed the late opening email that was sent.
Have a lovely week everyone,
Best wishes,
Beth Popperwell

W/C 20th November
Dear Families,
I hope you had a lovely weekend.
Thank you to all that made it to the 'Spotty Mini Marathon'. The RRS Change Makers and children in Year 6, showed kindness and enthusiasm all morning - brilliant role models for the school. Please hand in all sponsor monies or donations this week.
I hope you enjoyed reading your child's COP28 letter - the RRS team posted the letters on Monday, so fingers crossed for a reply!
This week, a letter confirming Christmas arrangements will come home - please read it and share it with your child. It is really helpful for the children to know what is happening and when. As always, I will share the newsletter and class email with the children.
Our learning will continue with fractions this week - I could not be prouder of the way the class are persevering with this; everyone engaging and excelling! We welcome our Redruth School maths teachers on Monday to spend time in class supporting. In Geography we will find out about the rivers of the UK and recap our learning on the mountains of the UK. Our Design & Technology projects are looking brilliant and will be ready to sell on December 3rd.
PE will be on Tuesday this week.
Thank you for the consistent homework being handed in and the support with spellings and reading -it is really making a difference. Please help with multiplication, telling the time and handwriting practise. Copying the week's spellings in best joined handwriting is a great way to practise two things at once!

w/c 9th October
Dear Families,
I hope you all had a lovely weekend and enjoyed the sunshine!
I can't believe how quickly the weeks are flying by! Last week was another super learning week in Year 6.
Spanish on Monday with Mr Housett was fenomenal all children were engaged and enjoying their learning.
Our Odysseus stories are nearly finished and will be published this week - hopefully you can read them at parent partnership meetings on Wednesday and Thursday.
Science is progressing well and the children are developing the skills of thinking like scientists: questioning, predicting and making connections.
Unfortunately, homework was not as well returned this week - thank you to all who encouraged their child to complete and hand in their homework. There is an opportunity to complete homework at school, however in preparation for the transition to secondary school, it will benefit your child to become organsied at home and find a routine to support with the completion of homework. I completely understand that some weeks are super busy at home and make homework completion tricky, please don't hesitate to contact me if this is the case.
This week we will have PE on Thursday.
Hello Yellow day, World Mental Health Day, is on Tuesday and our Year 6 RRS Change Makers have been busy around school in promoting this. Please read the school newsletter for further details - yellow or comfy clothes can be worn to school.
Our multiplication focus last week was the 8 x tables and related facts. This week it will be the 9 x tables and related facts - use TTRS to support this - there are also some fun games on TOPMARKS to support with multiplication and division.
Have a great week and I look forward to seeing you at Parent Partnership meetings on Wednesday and Thursday,
Best wishes
Beth Popperwell

 w/c/ 2nd October
Dear Families,
It was lovely to see so many of you at Open Afternoon - thank you for coming!
It has been another busy learning week in Year 6 and we are enjoying many different curriculum subjects.
One of our big questions in class this week has been ' Why do we do maths?' a question many children ask.  There has been great discussion around where we encounter maths in real life and what jobs need maths. The outcome to the discussion was everywhere and every job! It was great to see so many of the children understanding this and making that important connection.
As always, knowing multiplication facts is vital, as one child in class said 'Timetables is in all maths, it is the base of maths.' Please support your child in having a solid understanding and recall of all multiplication facts. Each child has their own TTRS login and can access this at home. 5 minutes each day will make a huge difference!
Hockey in PE is progressing really well and the class were playing small sided games this week with tackling - shin pads would be really helpful (they can use them in Secondary School then).
Friday morning's science was active with pulse rates being accurately recorded - we are looking forward to finding out more about how our heart works.
On Monday, we welcome Mr Housett from Redruth School into class. He will be teaching us Spanish for the next few weeks as part of our MFL curriculum and in preparation for transition to secondary school. PE will be on Monday and Thursday next week. Keep reading - we are enjoying The Odyssey by Gillian Cross in class - an Ancient Greek tale of adventure and courage!
Have a great week,
Best wishes

w/c 25th September
Dear Families
Another super week for Year 6!
Firstly, a massive thank you for your support with homework - amazing start. It is brilliant to have the support from home to reinforce the key messages of reading and completing homework.
I will continue to send homework home on a Monday to be handed back in by Friday. The children know that if the week at home is busy, they can complete homework during playtime or lunchtime.
RRS Change Makers have already made an impact around school. They visited each class throughout the week to discuss our whole school Articles 12 and 6 in more detail. I know they have many ideas that they will be sharing this week.
Our footballers made s great start to our sporting calendar - superb team work by all involved.
A huge well done to all Year 6 children for a wonderful beach walk on Friday - not one moan or groan a pleasure to be with.
PE will be Tuesday and Thursday this week. Thank you for ensuring your child is in school PE kit, they really do look very smart, true role models. I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday for our open afternoon from 2:15 pm.
Have a great week everyone,
Best wishes

 w/c 18th September
Dear Families,
Another great week in Year 6 - well done to all!
Thank you for supporting spellings and reading. This week our curriculum leaflet will come home, this shows an over view of teaching and learning for the term. Please discuss this with your child.
As always, there are really useful learning links on the school website, if you want to do any extra at home and BBC Bitesize is always full of activities to support all curriculum learning.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/levels/zbr9wmn
Key Stage 2 is a phase of primary education for pupils aged 7 to 11 in England and Wales.
www.bbc.co.uk

Thursday evening is the Redruth School Open Evening from 5pm until 8pm - drop in at a time to suit you. It is a fun evening and you will be able to visit classrooms and departments and ask any questions - I know the children always love it as there are many exciting activities to try!
Friday is the beach walk - thank you for the swift response to filling in the slips, it makes it so much easier to organise! Fingers crossed for good weather.
Reading comprehension homework will come home on Monday to be handed in on Friday - thank you in advance for your support with this. I know I keep highlighting its importance but reading is key - Mr Bonds (Headteacher of Redruth School) said exactly the same when he visited on Monday!
Next week, we will have PE on Thursday.
Have a great week everyone
Best wishes

 w/c 11th September

 Dear Families,
What an amazing start to the new school year!
It was wonderful to see the children last week and they were ALL brilliant - despite the heat!!  We even presented a whole class poem in assembly with every child engaging, enjoying and excelling!
The children talked honestly about how they are feeling about starting year 6 and the things they are looking forward to. Our RRS - Change Makers had their first meeting with Miss Horne and are very excited about the role they will play within school.

This week, on Monday Mr Bonds and Mr Bartlett from Redruth School will meet with the children to answer questions about year 7. Both Mr Bonds and Mr Bartlett will then be available to talk to parents after school.

Bikeability will take place on Wednesday for all those that completed the level 1 day back in July. Please bring bikes to school, helmets and wear suitable clothing.

PE will be on Thursday this week. Please ensure correct PE kit is worn.

Thank you to all of you that have already recorded reads on BOOM READER - I will sort out log ins this week for all those that have misplaced them.

It looks like it is going to be another warm week - so please ensure water bottles are in and apply suncream if needed.

I look forward to another week with Year 6, any questions do not hesitate to ask.
Have a great week everyone,
Best wishes
Beth Popperwell

w/c 26th June
Dear Families,
I hope you have had a great weekend and enjoyed the sun - again!
Thank you to all of Year 6, parents and children, for making Feast Day really special - excellent behaviour and engagement from all the children and they looked amazing!
This week, we welcome Cornwall Climate Care into school to talk about how we can all be part of looking after our wonderful planet - I am sure year 6 and our Rights Respecters will have plenty to say about this. This week, the children will enjoy more Spanish learning and continue to find out all about light in science.
We will have PE on Wednesday and Thursday but are getting outside as much as possible, so please remember sun cream and full water bottles every day.
Thank you to all of you that have been listening to your child read and encouraging them to talk about their text. We had a super week last week discussing books and focusing on sharing favourite passages of text - we will keep the focus on reading this week.
Final arrangement for Adventure Learning Week will happen this week so please read all emails and communication. Your help with transport over the year has been genuinely brilliant, please continue this for Adventure Learning Week so all the children can have a wonderful end to their school year.
Best wishes

w/c 19th June
Dear Families,
That was a busy week! How wonderful to be able offer so many exciting and engaging opportunities to our children - they are lucky children!
We began the week at The Writer's Block in Redruth, a truly inspirational place for creative thinking and writing. The children were superb, fully engaged and enjoying the chance to write in a different setting. We met a wonderful Cornish story writer called Mark Crees, who emailed the school to say....

It was so lovely to work with all of the children on Tuesday. What a fine class they are, and what great writers. I loved all of the bits they wrote about our mysterious wardrobes. I also enjoyed hearing about their musical moments. They are all very good at clapping to the bongo drums too!
I really want to wish them all the very best in secondary school. And thank you, teachers, for all of your support during the session. I greatly enjoyed it.

We then welcomed Fran and Alice from RJ working into school to celebrate the journey Year 6 have had throughout their time at St Day and Carharrack Primary School. The children were really reflective and spoke with confidence and pride about their achievements.

This week, we will continue to reflect on our time at school by writing about camp and the activities we enjoyed together. There will be photos coming soon!
PE will be on Wednesday and Thursday and of course, we start the week with Feast Day - the last one for this class - let's enjoy it happily together.
Thank you for all the reading that is happening, the children are telling me they are reading at home and I have seen a few parents logging reading on Boom Reader - let's all try and access Boom Reader and continue to encourage, support and develop the children's love of reading!
Have a great week and see you at Feast!
Best wishes
Beth Popperwell

 w/c 12th June
Dear Families,
I hope everyone had a lovely weekend!
I would like to thank all the parents that were involved in helping the children pack for camp - every child had everything they needed and because of this camp ran really smoothly. The children were organised and so neat and tidy in their pods - I hope they are like this at home!
The stand out thing for me from camp was the kindness and thoughtfulness the children showed to each other.  They truly lived the school values of enjoyment, engagement and excellence!
This week we shall be continuing our writing about the Amazon rainforest and finding out about the layers of the rainforest and the diverse and complex ecosystems within it.
PE will be on Tuesday and Wednesday and we will be starting our Feast Day practising! Please make sure Feast Day letters are returned, it is a busy day for us and this information is vital in knowing who needs to be where at what time.
We will also be having a class push on reading as there is often the temptation once SATs have passed to let reading slip. Reading is the one thing that will ensure your child's secondary transition goes smoothly and it is essential we keep reading regularly. Please have a conversation with your child about their reading text and support with reading at home.
Have a great week,
Best wishes
Beth Popperwell

W/c 5th June
Dear Families
WOW - what an amazing week of weather. I hope you were all able to enjoy some time in the sun!
We have a busy and exciting week ahead of us as we look forward to camp. Monday and Tuesday will be normal school days, so usual uniform, water bottles, sun cream and sun hats please.
We are continuing our writing based on the Amazon rainforest and will be discussing the devastation caused by deforestation. This will then form the basis of our discussion text writing.

Hopefully you have all had some time to spend packing for camp. As the weather looks to be staying sunny and getting hotter, please bear this in mind. SUNCREAM and HAT are vital. We are outside all day with very little shade but the evenings will be cool. Pack with your child - they need to know what is in their bag!
Arrival at school on Wednesday is the NORMAL time 8:45 and on Friday we should be back at 2pm - the office will inform you of any changes on the Friday.
On Wednesday, your child will need a packed lunch, in a packed lunch box, in a ruck sack. They will also need a full bottle of water, no glass bottles. Also, in their ruck sack could they please have swimwear, towel and suncream as we will be heading to the beach once we arrive at Porthpean to eat lunch and paddle.
What a wonderful week we are going to have! Please email any questions to myself or the office.
Enjoy your week,
Beth Popperwell

 w/c 22nd May
Dear Families,
I hope you have all had a wonderful weekend in the sun!
Last week, the children showed their skills as writers and wow - they wrote some amazing pieces. We have written: fables, poems and fact files and this week, the children have voted to write an adventure story based on being lost in the Amazon rainforest; I can't wait to teach them and see how the stories develop.
Thank you for the swift responses to leavers' hoodies - please read Mrs Moule's email from Friday.
There will be a brief camp meeting on Thursday at 3.15pm in the hall, to talk through the kit list. This then gives us all the half term to get organised (myself included!).
PE will be Monday and Wednesday this week and we have our Spaceport trip on Thursday - the same day as class photo, please be in school by 8.35am.
The weather is meant to stay good for a while so we will be outside as much as possible. Water bottles, hats, suncream and shorts -if wanted- are all essential at this time of year for everyone to be able to engage and be safe outside.
I look forward to an exciting week with Year 6 - there was a real feeling of teamwork and unity in class last week - let's keep that going Year 6!
Best wishes
Beth Popperwell

w/c 15th May
Dear Families,
What an amazing effort from everyone last week  - the children were all superb and did their absolute best. We are proud of all our year 6!
This week, we will be enjoying writing across the curriculum in a range of different genres. We will look at Amazon Rainforest animals and begin to put our own fact files together and then create some poems.
We will begin our science topic all about light and continue with our computing coding lessons.
We welcome Miss Palwyn to our class for the next 8 weeks, she will be teaching alongside myself as part of her final SCITT teacher training. I know she is going to be hugely popular and an asset to the class.
We will have PE on Wednesday and Thursday this week.
Thank you again for all your support with the SATs preparation, parent engagement is key to all aspects of school life and you have been amazing. The children are lucky to have such support and engagement from you.
Have a great week everyone - PLEASE check all emails, read the website and ask if you are unsure of dates etc. It gets very busy, very quickly in the Summer term!
Best wishes

w/c/8th May
Dear Families,
There have been so many WOW moments this week in class! The children have all excelled in the expectation of themselves and totally given their all - I could not ask for more. They have been united in supporting each other in the buildup to SATs and there has been a wonderful sense of team work in class and around school from all our Year 6.
I would like again to say a MASSIVE thank you for your support with homework, reading, punctuality and involvement in SATs preparation.
Next week, we will have PE on Tuesday and Friday.
Below is a timetable of the tests. All children need to be in school prompt. Doors will open at 8.30am if the children want to come in a little earlier to get settled.

 w/c 2nd May
Dear Families
I hope you enjoyed the long weekend and managed to find some sunshine!
The children in Year 6 have had another busy week, they are certainly keeping up the pace and have all shown great resilience and perseverance.
I think the mix of hard work and recapping of previous learning mixed in with plenty of outdoor PE is definitely working for the children - they all seem keen and enthusiastic.
We will have a similar feel this week, with plenty of revisiting past learning alongside finding out more about the Amazon rainforest and another super session of rugby!
PE this week will be on Wednesday and Thursday.  Please encourage your child to keep up with their daily reading and discuss the text with them. The more they can read, the easier all other aspects of the curriculum become.
Have a great week,
Best wishes

Dear Families
What a wonderful start to the Summer term we have had! The children could not have worked harder this week - super work ethic and motivation by all of them. Let's keep this going in the build - up to SATs week.
We began our topic all about the Amazon Rainforest and became geographers for the afternoon. The children were quickly engaged in asking questions about the climate, Amazon animals and the future of the rainforest - we are now excited to find out the answers over the next few weeks.
PE next week will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday and we welcome the RNLI in on Tuesday to talk to us all about Beach Safety.
Thank you again for supporting homework - absolutely brilliant! I will be sending home some practise papers this week, that the children could try on Thursday as further prepartion for our SATs. The children may have mentioned Leavers hoodies, we will send more information in a separate email once we have confirmation of costings.
Have a great week,
Best wishes

Dear Families,
I can't wait to see the children on Monday.
The summer term is my absolute favourite and we are going to have a super time together. I have lots planned for the children, including some fun revision quizzes and activities in the build up to SATs week. Please keep supporting with homework and listening to your child read - the children will be more than ready to do their very best in SATs.
PE next week will be on Monday and Friday. On Friday we welcome back Sam from Cornish Pirates Rugby!
Our topic for the term will focussed on the Amazon Rainforest and we will be reading the book -Journey to the river sea by Eva Ibbotson. This book will inspire us to write our own adventure stories and fact files based on the mighty Amazon!
As always, please ask if you have any questions or thoughts.

w/c 27th March
Dear Families
I hope you all had a great weekend.
I can't quite believe we are in the final week of the Spring term - I told the children it would go quickly!
The children have been amazing this term, they have adapted to changes quickly and have engaged in new learning with enthusiasm - really well-done year 6!
Over the Easter holiday, I will be sending home a SPaG, maths and reading paper for the children to complete.
The learning in these papers is learning that has been covered throughout their primary school journey. Please encourage your children to attempt as much as possible. I have been so impressed, and genuinely thankful, for the support you have all given towards homework over this term and it HAS made a difference to all those that have consistently engaged in it.
I would also like to thank you for your support with fundraising and ideas and suggestions you have put forward. The disco this Thursday will hopefully raise a good amount of money for the children.
After the Spring holiday, we will be getting ready for our SATs tests - it is vital that all the children are here every day and during the SATs week, The children cannot take the tests at any other time.

Both groups are swimming this week: group 1 Monday, group 2 Wednesday and PE will be on Tuesday.
I hope you all have a wonderful holiday and I will look forward to seeing all the children after the holiday for their final term in Primary School!
Best wishes

w/c 20th March
Dear Families
I hope you all had a super weekend.
I would like to start by saying a huge thank you for all the support you are giving your child in completing homework. It really is making a big difference - the children are becoming more confident with key reading and maths skills and are applying this to all their learning. Please keep this up over the next few weeks as we approach Year 6 SATs tests. There will be a break from homework after the tests!!
Last week we enjoyed a brilliant science assembly led by Dr Gower from Redruth school. He literally sparked all of the children's interest in science and the opportunities on offer in Year 7. We will continue with a science focus this week to celebrate British Science Weeks theme of 'connections'.
We will be focusing on reading and inference and impression questions as these are often the trickier questions to answer. In the back of your child's reading book are some great examples of this style of question - please have a look.
Maths will continue to cover key arithmetic skills - multiplication facts are imperative in answering these. We will also be looking at data handling and the different ways data is represented.
PE this week will take place on Friday morning. Please read all emails sent from the office, it is a busy week! And please have conversations with your child about what is happening and how this impacts them. As part of transition to secondary school, taking responsibility for their own organisation is key.
Have a lovely week,
Best wishes

w/c 13th March
Dear Families,
I hope you all had a lovely weekend.
Year 6 have been very busy all week and have been lucky enough to take part in a whole range of learning opportunities.
We started the week welcoming Sam and Mel form the children's charity Barnardo's in . They spent two days working with us on the importance of healthy relationships, revisiting the very important messages of internet safety and discussing whether secrets are safe or unsafe. 'We learnt some very important messages and had great fun!'
As always, our sports leaders have been amazing in supporting and running PE sessions for the younger children. Their commitment to the role is to be commended - they approach the sessions with maturity and enthusiasm.
The first of our fundraising events took place on Thursday with our cake sale. A massive THANK YOU to all the parents that sent in cakes and buns - we made an amazing amount of money in a very short space of time!
The children have also been creating their own clay dinosaurs and fossils and learning the different techniques for shaping clay. The children have all finished writing biographies about Charles Darwin and they all look amazing!
This week, we begin our adventure story writing unit, which will be based on the journey of Darwin on the HMS Beagle.
PE will be on Tuesday - the same day as the mini marathon, please come along and support if you can.
Group 1 will swim on Monday and group 2 on Wednesday.
Have a super week and thank you again for your wonderful support with the cake sale!
Best wishes

Dear Families,
We have had a super week in year 6. And all the children are working quicker - working towards a time target and meeting deadlines is an essential skill for life and the children are rising to the challenge! I will keep this as a focus for the week ahead.
Thank you to all parents that are supporting homework with their children. I know some of it is challenging and your support in reinforcing learning is much needed and appreciated.
We had a practise of a SATs reading paper and maths reasoning paper last week and the children tackled it with enthusiasm and confidence - brilliant! This week we will have a practise SPaG paper and another maths paper to try.

We also welcome Barnardo's into school to talk about Healthy Relationships and the transition to Secondary School. We have taken part in these workshops for a few years now and they are excellent in opening the conversation about leaving Primary and moving on to Secondary School. I think the children are realising how quickly time is going and that the big move is fast approaching. We will do all we can to ensure the children feel confident, excited and happy to move on and these workshops are excellent at supporting this.

PE will be on Thursday morning and please come and support the mini marathon and Cake Sale from 2.10pm in the afternoon.
PLEASE send in as many cakes, buns, biscuits as you can on Thursday morning to sell at the marathon. All money received on the cake stall will be put towards camp - the more we have to sell the more money we can make!

Please encourage your child to read daily and practise their spellings. Below is a link to a super site that has a wealth of SATs practise games and ideas that the children could try - little and often is the key to success during this time.
Searchable site of thousands of quality teaching resources, interactive resources, homework, exam and revision help. Useful for teachers, pupils and parents.

Have a super week all, thank you to all those that could make it to the camp meeting, more details to follow in a separate email.

 w/c 27th February
Dear Families,
I hope you have had a super weekend.
It was lovely to be back with the children last week. We had a wonderful week and were able to post our persuasive letters - fingers crossed for some positive replies!
This week, we will celebrate all things 'Books and Reading' as part of World Book Day - please read all emails for additional information. I look forward to sharing some beautiful books with the children throughout the week.
We will continue with our Charles Darwin biographies this week and start to explore some of the fascinating creatures on the Galapagos Islands. I have been challenging the children to work at pace so we can complete all learning. This will continue to be a focus for the week ahead.
We will have PE on Tuesday and group 1 will go swimming - all information on the swimming email.
Hopefully we will be able to spend as much time as possible outside this week, it is meant to be sunny but cold, so please ensure coats are in school.
Our playleaders have been amazing in supporting the younger children over lunchtime, an absolute credit to year 6!
There will be a camp fundraising catch-up meeting on Wednesday at 2.30pm, if you can offer any time that would be great.
Best wishes

w/c 20th February
Dear Families,
I hope you have all had a wonderful week and enjoyed some of the beautiful weather. It is certainly beginning to feel like Spring is on the way - at last!
We will begin the half term as paleontologists and try to dig up as much information about the dinosaurs as possible. We will also be learning about the biologist Charles Darwin and his discoveries and theories - all very exciting.
We will be writing our persuasive letters this week and sending them off to local businesses, hopefully with many positive responses to our Camp Fundraising target of £1000.
There is a meeting on the 1st March at 2.30pm to share jobs out and ideas. Thank you to all of you that have sent in some brilliant fundraising ideas already.
PE this week will be Tuesday. We will also be having some swimming sessions starting next week - an email with further information will be sent later in the week.
Homework will remain the same. Sent on Friday to be handed in Tuesday, sent on Tuesday to be handed in Friday. The children have been amazing at handing the homework in on time - thank you for your support with this and please keep doing so, especially in the build up to SATs.
I am really looking forward to this half term, it is going to be enjoyable, exciting and engaging for everyone.

w/c 6th February
Dear Families
I know I keep saying it but we have had another truly amazing week!! The children have been purposeful in their learning and have been productive and focused throughout the week.
The Mary Anning books the children have made are excellent - they are full of wonderful language and some quite beautiful sentences. We have a superb class display -photo below - which reflects the care and attention they have given their books.
This week we will begin our persuasive letter writing unit. We will be writing to local businesses to ask for donations to put towards school camp - let's hope their voices are heard and we get some positive responses. We will also be engaging in activities to support Children's Mental Health Week - which has the theme of Let's connect.
Another THANK YOU, this time for your engagement with homework, it is great to see the home school link with learning making a difference. The children are all handing in homework and are proud to do so.
PE this week will be Wednesday and Friday.
Friday will also be a special day that recognises the end of Children's Mental Health Week - we will have a connected whole key stage fun PE session with Mr Ayre - it's going to be loud!!
Have a great week everyone,
Best wishes

w/c 30th January
Dear Families,
We have had an amazing week again. Focusing on our value of engagement, the children in Year 6 have been busy across all curriculum subjects. We have been: classification scientists, RE academics, fossil hunters in art, gymnasts in PE, web page designers in computing and Spanish linguists (amongst other things!).
The children have shown kindness and respect to each other and have been excellent role models across school, especially at playtimes and lunch times.
Our story writing has been based on the life of the paleontologist Mary Anning and her discovery of the ichthyosaur skeleton. The children have written their own stories based on her life and are now beginning to make them into books. We have used watercolours to paint the front covers and they are already looking stunning.
Our three medal winning gymnasts represented us at the finals at Penryn gymnastic centre on Friday and ' We had so much fun!' was the main quote - very proud of them all.
Thank you so much for your support with homework, the children are regularly handing in homework of a very high standard. This is such good practise for the transition to secondary school. Redruth School newsletter, also gives a real insight as to the activities on offer at secondary school - it is well worth a read and will be sent out by the office.
PE next week will be on Tuesday and Wednesday, school uniform all other days please.
Have a super week all.
Best wishes

w/c 23rd Jamuary
Dear Families,
Wow another amazing week - including a snow day!
The year 6 children are showing huge amounts of maturity and resilience in their learning and I could not be more proud of all of them.
Last week the class produced wonderful historical fiction writing, superb maths about scale and ratio, and a super quick grasp of the Spanish alphabet and phonics!
A huge well done to our swimming team that represented us so well in the Redruth school swimming gala - they showed amazing resilience and team spirit.

Thank you for all your support with homework, some children have handed all pieces in on time. Let's try and get 100% handed in this week - your encouragement is vital in this. Developing good homework habits and attitudes will support your child at Secondary School where they will have a great deal more than they have at the moment.

This week we will have PE on Tuesday and Wednesday and don't forget our camp meeting on Thursday morning - there is excitement growing already!

Please check the website for newsletters and information and continue to use Boom Reader for recording reading.
Have a super week all,

Dear Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend.
The children had another super learning week, very busy and focused.
We had an amazing group of girls represent us at our first gymnastics competition on Thursday and they did exceptionally well - they won! We are all so proud of not only their ability but the mature and supportive way they conducted themselves.
The children have been looking at fossils from the Jurassic coast and have been enthralled by the 3d interactive model of the world during the dinosaur periods. We will begin creating our own clay models of fossils this week and placing dinosaurs on a huge class timeline.
Hopefully the children have been talking about the wall painting happening outside the classroom, they have been so excited by it and it is now finished ready for them to see on Monday.
I would like to say a massive thank you for your support with homework - just brilliant - and the children are showing a real sense of pride in handing it in.  Same again this week please!
PE will be on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.
Attendance has been better this week, we managed one day when 100% of the class were in school - that hasn't happened in a very long time. As we build up towards SATs it is vital that the children are here every day as we are recapping previous learning as well as learning new concepts and skills.
As always, coats, reading books and water bottles need to be in school daily - thank you to all of you who do this every single day, it makes the school day run much more smoothly.
Have a great week all,
Best wishes

w/c 9th January
Dear Families.
What a great start to the new term we had last week! The children came back settled, happy and ready to learn - a credit to you all.
This week we launch our new topic about Mary Anning the paleontologist and we will begin to find out about the earliest dinosaurs.
We have made a super start with our new maths topic of ratio and although tricky, the children are focused and trying their absolute best to get to grips with this new topic.
This week, homework will come home on Tuesday to be handed in on Friday and the second piece will come home on Friday to be handed in on Tuesday - as always thank you for all your support with homework - it really is making a difference!
PE this week will be on Tuesday and Wednesday. Please ensure your child has a coat, their school reading book and water bottle in everyday. We still have children without school jumpers, hoodies or coats - it is cold and wet again this week and we will be heading outside. Please help by checking your child is ready for the day.
There will be information coming home shortly about this years residential trip so please check emails.
Have a super week,
Best wishes

 w/c 4th January
Dear Families,
Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful break.

We have a busy term ahead of us with many exciting and engaging learning opportunities based on evolution, dinosaurs, Charles Darwin and adaptation.
There will be a big focus on reading and reading comprehension this term, one reading comprehension a week will be sent home for homework. This will come home on Friday and will need to be handed back in by the following Tuesday. The comprehension will be based on a wide range of reading types: non fiction, fiction and poetry  - please support your child with this. The second piece of homework will have a  maths focus, which will come home on Tuesday to be handed in on Friday. Spellings will be sent home on Monday as usual. Please ask if you have any questions about homework.
Homework not only supports class learning but also encourages the children to take responsibly and organisation of their own learning in preparation for secondary school.

PE this week will take place on Wednesday and Thursday.
We will start the new term with clear reminders about our school Golden Rules and how year 6 are the role models for the school in all they do. We saw wonderful examples of this by some of our Sports leaders and RRS Change Makers last term - let's all be even better this term - the year 6 terms whizz by and I want them to be busy and happy for all the children.
Please ensure coats and water bottles are in school ALL THE TIME! Keep recording reads on Boom Reader and please check the school website for newsletters and information.

I look forward to a super term, thank you all for your kind Christmas wishes, cards and gifts - very much appreciated!
Best wishes

Dear Families,
I hope you all had a great weekend and managed the icy conditions!
Thank you to all parents and children that attended our Christmas Happening, the singing was beautiful! It was also lovely to see so many ex- pupils.
Last week, the children worked extremely hard on their end of term assessments and I was delighted by the mature attitude they showed - we have two more to do this week before we fully embrace Christmas on Wednesday with our Christmas lunch and PE fun and games!
Of course, on Thursday we will all be heading off to the pantomime - how exciting that we all get to go together. Please read all previous letters and communication for full details.
Last week, Years 5 and 6 were privileged to have sessions with PC Toby and PC Phil who spoke to us with clarity and humor about what it means to be part of a community. We looked at issues around anti - social behaviour , what that means and who it affects, respect of our community environment and how we keep safe on the internet.
The last session was probably the most eye opening. As a parent myself, I always appreciate these messages.  Our children are so adept at using their devices, that it made me think as to whether I really know all the sites they are on , the recommended ages of the sites and the pitfalls that come with them.  A truly eye-opening session, with the biggest message being: know what sites your children are on and have over sight of what they are doing. Leaving them on a screen for hours on end is not safe or healthy!
The children ended the week by designing some amazing posters which they will be bringing home.
If I don't see you before the end of term, thank you for all your support. I wish you all a Happy Christmas, be safe and enjoy time with your children.
Best wishes
Beth Popperwell
